Message from the President
Welcome to the Abington Township Police Association (ATPA) website. We hope you enjoy the new format.
Abington Township is located in the southeastern portion of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and is adjacent to Philadelphia, Pa. It has a diverse population of approximately 56,000 people. Abington Township has been recognized as one of the top one-hundred communities to live for three consecutive years. The Abington Township Police Dept. is accredited through the Pennsylvania Police Chiefs Association and also has achieved national accreditation (CALEA) for nine consecutive years. These accomplishments were achieved, in large part, to the hard work, dedication and professionalism of the members of the ATPA.
The Abington Township Police Department consists of approximately one-hundred thirty-four sworn and civilian employees. There are eighty-eight members consisting of sergeants, detectives, and patrol officers that the ATPA represents. The association represents all officers below the rank of lieutenant that have completed their probationary period. Presently, the ATPA has a one-hundred percent membership of all eligible officers.
The ATPA was formed in 1980 and is the primary bargaining unit for its members. It also provides legal aid, representation in disciplinary and grievance issues and contract interpretations.
The ATPA is financially sustained by dues paid by its members as well as funding from the many benefits it holds. The ATPA also sponsors scholarship funds for college bound students through its annual Dick Williams Golf Outing and the Robert Wilsbach Scholarship Fund.
The ATPA also provides donations to others who are in need after agreement with the membership. Most notably the ATPA held a benefit for the Philadelphia Police Department’s FOP Lodge #5. Happily, members presented a check for seventeen-thousand ($17,000.00) dollars to FOP Lodge #5. These funds will be used to assist those families of the Phila. Police Dept. that have had loved ones killed or seriously injured in the line of duty.
I would personally like to thank you for visiting our website. I wish you all a safe and happy future.
